 Skiing Day 2012
Skiing day
Just before we broke up for Easter holiday we went skiing. All the teachers and students at Straumen Skole enjoyed the day and we proved that “Norwegians are born with skies on their feet”. We played some skiing games and we also had a barbecue inside a Sami tent – or a construction that looks like it
J
The weather did not spoil our day although it was drizzling but all in all the skiing trip was successful.
 Carnival 2012
Carnival 2012
As tradition has it, this year’s Carnival was launched on the last school day before winter break. Everyone was looking forward to the dress-up party and the question: “Who are you going to dress up as?” was asked many a time. No student wanted to spill the beans about the character they were going to dress up as – everything was kept top secret. But when the long-awaited dress-up party came some of us had a real opportunity to feel like celebs when the walked along the famous catwalk. Who came to our fashion show? There were 2 spies, Lord Darth Vader, a spooky skeleton, a mourning lady, fashion designers, witches - just to name a few! After the fashion show we played a balloon game - the aim of which was to burst your opponent’s balloon but at the very same time you had to avoid having your balloon busted by other opponents. “Pass the orange game” was another game organised. Here are the rules: students were divided into 2 teams. The task was to pass the orange to the next person in a queue, neck to neck - without using hands of course! (or legs for that matter!). Oranges were only allowed to be tucked under one’s chin and passed this way!
If the orange fell, the person who made it fall had to bend down, sat on the knee or even lie down and catch the orange under the chin. Then, he/she had to get up like that and then continue passing the orange!
And finally piñata competition – beautifully decorated, filled with candies, and then broken to children’s entertainment !
Do you want to see what fun we had! See the pictures!
 Solmarsj 2012
Celebrating the sun – Solmarsj 2012
Hello everyone! Welcome back after a while! Here I come with the latest news concerning our school trips. This time we celebrated the long-awaited appearance of the sun in the sky. Do I hear someone shout: At last! Polar nights are over! Yes, you are right on that one - the long period of darkness that covered Northern Norway is a thing of the past! It was dark; it was scary but fret no more! The sun is back and every day seems to be longer and longer.
Students and teachers from the Straumen Skole went on a 2-hour long walk. The whole route was longer for the older students who are more experienced in covering long distances. The route was marked with some control posts
together with a control flag. When the control post was found, the control card had to be punched with a special puncher (a special tool for making holes). Having done that, the students were ready to go further and further in the direction of Russelv – and then back to school!
As usual Berit and students who have family science classes baked some “solboller”- sweet
buns shaped like the sun and with a delicious pudding center (just to lick with your tongue!). Then, those who wanted could smear sweet buns with icing and coat the buns in coconut sprinkle. Yummy!
 St. Lucia Day
Tradition
has it that every year at Straumen Skole we celebrate St. Lucia Day
. This holiday is held on December 13 in several countries in
Europe, namely Sweden, Denmark,
and of course Norway. The holiday is in honor of
Saint Lucy. On this day, young girls and boys at our school dress like Saint Lucia
in a white robe and a crown of candles. A parade is organised, students sing
special songs and they serve saffron-flavoured buns (lussekatter) shaped
like curled-up cats and with raisin eyes. This year’s cakes were delectable and
our youngest Saint Lucia
characters put on a great performance!
 Study-tour to Poland
And here it
is – a long awaited first-hand account of our first (hopefully not the last) study
tour to the country where very few have gone before (some of them haven’t even
returned home yet). Most of us
thought that it would be
too courageous to boldly go where few have gone before – and they were right on
that one!
Poland - a country where its people are mysteriously in love with the Polish bread, Poles go gaga when they hear the Czech language and they find foreigners speaking Polish entertaingng. What a country !!
Have a happy (and tasty) Thanksgiving!
Thanksgiving at the Straumen Skole!!
On November the 24, we held another themed classes – this time we settled on celebrating
Thanksgiving with all the students at the Straumen Skole. The students were
broken into 3 groups according to their age. We held 3 types of workshops –
cooking/ arts and crafts and games/ fun activities workshops. Jessica and Gerd together
with the kids prepared a finger-licking turkey and salads that went with it.
The students also helped a lot with making the gravy and mashing potatoes. The tables simply groaned with
yummy food!
In arts and
crafts workshops we coloured colouring pages featuring Pilgrims/ turkey/ Indians
and made paper turkeys while in games and fun activities workshops we played Thanksgiving
Bingo, sang Thanksgiving songs and played some Thanksgiving-related games. Thanks
a lot to all the students and teachers at the Straumen Skole for their effort
and grabbing the opportunity I would also like to express special thanks to Fredrik who helped with
decorating the school cafeteria!
Have a happy, have a happy, have a happy Halloween !!
Have a happy, have a happy, have a happy Halloween !!
On October the 31, we had another themed class – this time we settled on celebrating Halloween. For this occasion I bought myself special, hairy, rubber gloves – imitating hands that werewolves have (LIMITED EDITION!!!). The computer lab was decorated by humble me: the Grim Reaper’s Assistant. Pumpkins garlands were hung on the wall, scarecrows and witches were put out, and the table in the middle of the room featured some jack-o-lanterns. The students at the Straumen Skole sand to the tune:
Have a happy, have a happy, have a happy Halloween !!

Only here at our website - A practical guide to the ins and outs of cutting up a lamb !!
Butchering a lamb is no walk in the park – this fact of life is known by every little child in our stunningly beautiful village. Firstly, we had to catch the lamb and that wasn’t a picnic either. As we had helped a local sheep farmer with rounding up sheep at the beginning of October we received one of the lambs for free – as a token of his gratitude. Yesterday, that is on Thursday the 27, we set about cutting up the lamb. See pictures and read more in the subsection: BILDER FRA SKOLEN (on the side menu) .
 The Nord Lenangen Mini Marathon

The Nord Lenangen Mini Marathon is held in
Nord Lenangen every year in October. This world-famous event known to everyone
outside Norway
who is into running races took place on 21 October 2011. As usual all the
students and teachers at the Straumen Skole took part in the race.
